Tascam DR-40X 4-channel / 4-track portable audio recorder with adjustable stereo microphone
For podcasts, sound effects and music recording applications, the Tascam DR-40X portable portable recorder is capable of capturing up to four high-resolution audio tracks without the need for external microphones. Its integrated unidirectional condenser microphones can be configured for a wide or tight stereo image, and can be used simultaneously with the combined microphone / line inputs. Equally skilled as a portable device or when used in camera or camera mounted configurations, the DR-40X can handle anything from sampling sessions and interviews to podcasts and live concerts.
Flexible power methods (batteries, USB bus power or an AC adapter) make the DR-40X very suitable for recording on the go, video recordings throughout the day and computer-based audio production. Do you need to patch external microphones or an external mixer? The two balanced XLR-1/4 "inputs of the DR-40X support microphone or line level signals (even +4 dBu from professional consoles) and can supply phantom power if necessary. Whether you use the built-in microphones or a source External, selectable modes, such as recording of stereo safety tracks, peak reduction, limitation and automatic level, offer you options for clean and distortion-free recording.
Unidirectional Microphones Adjustable
The DR-40X's built-in condenser microphones allow you to capture in stereo or 2 x stereo capture when used with microphone / line inputs. For sources that produce sound pressure levels of up to 125 dB, loud concerts will not be a problem. While the DR-05X has omnidirectional microphones in a fixed AB configuration, the DR-40X features adjustable unidirectional microphones. Unidirectional microphones minimize the pickup of sound that enters from the back of the capsules, resulting in a more focused tone with fewer reflections.
Easily rotate the capsules between two microphone settings to complement your sound source: use the AB position (capsules facing outwards) to produce a wide stereo image, or switch to the XY position (capsules facing inwards) if you need a stereo field tighter with strong central presence and less phase differences.
Dual XLR-1/4 "microphone / line inputs with phantom power
Dual Neutrik XLR-1/4 "TRS combined jacks support microphone level and +4 dBu line level, allowing you to record external microphones or balanced outputs from a FOH mixer or console. With 24V switchable phantom power or 48V and wide gain, the microphone preamps can serve a variety of microphones, such as dynamic, tape or condenser types. With integrated microphones, you can capture the ambient sound of an audience while recording directly from an external console, What is ideal for live performances.
Supports microSDXC cards up to 128 GB
To maximize compactness and portability, the DR-40X records directly to media cards (available separately). The microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC cards (up to 128 GB capacity) are compatible for long recording times even at high audio resolutions. With a 128GB card, the DR-40X can record in stereo for up to 192 hours at 16 bits / 44.1 kHz using an uncompressed WAV format and compatible with BWF.
3.5mm headphone / line out
When you want to record on your camera and on the DR-40X, simply connect the 3.5mm mini-jack output of the DR-40X to the input of your camera, then use the +/- buttons on the home screen to adjust the level output Alternatively, connect a pair of headphones to the 3.5mm mini jack to listen critically. Quick monitor checks can be performed through the integrated mono speaker of the DR-40X.
USB microphone and audio interface functionality
Connect the DR-40X to your Mac / Windows computer or iOS device via USB for real-time bidirectional audio routing. Once recognized and configured, the DR-40X can be used as a USB microphone or as a 2-in / 2-out audio interface for your favorite audio software.
