A sophisticated optical design with two additional refractive elements, three low dispersion elements, three glass molded aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element helps suppress aberrations and distortions across the zoom range, while eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to individual elements to control Lens Brightness and Phantom Effect to improve contrast and color fidelity.

In balancing its optical attributes, this lens also uses a USM autofocus engine to deliver remarkably fast, quiet and accurate focusing performance that fits both still images and video applications. In addition, 5-step Vibration Compensation helps minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper manual capture in difficult lighting conditions.

The standard zoom is designed for DSLR with Nikon F-mount FX format, however, it can also be used with DX models where it offers an equivalent focal length range of 36 to 105 mm.

The constant maximum aperture f / 2.8 bright provides constant brightness throughout the zoom range and benefits from working in difficult lighting conditions.
