The Sony FE 50mm f/2.8 macro lens offers an impressive maximum magnification of 1: 1, along with a minimum focusing distance of 6.3", to create true-size images of close-up subjects Useful controls, such as the printed upper distance and magnification scale, the focus range limiter and focus retention button, benefit from more precise focusing adjustments for refined results. Complementing the handling capabilities, the optical design also incorporates an aspherical and an extra - Low Dispersion Element, which works to suppress aberrations.

The main standard macro lens is designed for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras, and can also be used on APS-C models, where it provides a focal length equivalent to 75mm.

The true macro design offers a magnification ratio of 1:1 in true size along with a minimum focusing distance of 6.3" to work with subjects in the foreground. A focusing distance and magnification scale is also printed on the top of the lens to assist in more technical applications

An extra low lens design is presented in the lens design and helps reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringes to improve clarity and color neutrality.

An aspherical element is incorporated into the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma and other monochromatic aberrations.
