In addition to its merits, the optical design features two extra-low dispersion elements and three aspherical elements, which reduce a variety of aberrations and distortions to produce images with high sharpness, clarity, and accurate color reproduction. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings are also used to suppress flare and ghosting for higher color fidelity and higher contrast.
Taking advantage of the optics, a stepping motor provides fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override to suit both still images and video applications. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be configured for intuitive adjustment to a variety of camera and exposure settings.

The programmable control ring is set, by default, to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
