Designed within the rigorous tolerances of a cinema lens, the Sony E-mount Sigma 40mm f / 1.4 DG HSM Artistic Lens is a wide lens of normal length characterized by a brilliant design and sophisticated optical design. The fast maximum aperture of f / 1.4 helps achieve effects of shallow depth of field and selective focus, and also adapts to work in difficult lighting conditions. The optical design incorporates a series of low dispersion elements and aspherical elements, which help improve sharpness and clarity by controlling spherical and chromatic aberrations. A super multilayer coating is also offered, which helps minimize reflections and shadows for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in bright lighting conditions.
Complementing the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic engine to produce fast, smooth and silent autofocusing performance with full-time manual focus override. The physical design features a brass bayonet mount, which offers rigidity and precision mounting together with a seal to protect against dust and moisture. In addition, a rounded nine-leaf diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Short-normal prime is designed for mirrorless cameras with full-frame Sony E mount, however, it is also suitable for APS-C models in which it provides a focal length equivalent to 60 mm.
