The ColorChecker White Balance card provides you with an exact reproduction of white. With changing lighting conditions, the camera alters how white is reproduced, resulting in color deviations in your photos. Most white balance cards are not neutral and can cause color shifts under different lighting conditions. But the ColorChecker White Balance card is an absolutely neutral white reference, scientifically crafted to prevent color changes and provide you with a precise and uniform surface that is spectrally neutral, in any lighting condition. This means you can be sure that your camera's image is the same as in reality.

The ColorChecker White Balance card also gives you a way to adjust your digital camera's color sensitivity to exactly match the ambient lighting conditions, effectively changing what the camera “sees.” The perceived color of white often changes based on environmental conditions – outdoors it appears cooler, indoors warmer, and under fluorescent light, it appears greener. Even in a controlled studio environment, this can be an issue. Whether on location or in your studio, setting a precise custom white balance before each photo session ensures achieving accurate colors from the start.

Setting a custom white balance for each lighting situation will make the correct color preview on your camera screen, make your histograms more reliable, and speed up color editing in post-production. Shooting in Raw allows you to capture these benefits at any time during the session, while if shooting in JPEG, it should be done on the first shot.

Why can't I use just any white object?

Performing white balance with a piece of paper or another gray element in the scene may seem like a simple alternative solution, but many objects are not completely neutral under all lighting conditions; and they are certainly not consistent. An inappropriate white balance will result in a color cast and a lack of consistency between lighting conditions.
