The grey card is a photographic tool in which a grey tone has been reproduced that reflects 18% of the light it receives and on the opposite side a white one with a 90% reflectivity. 18% of the grey card can be used to determine the correct exposure (hence 18%) and can even be used in a couple of different ways to help establish the correct colour balance for the shot.
